Alpine District Cubs asked us to provide storage for their files for this post. ENJOY!
For our Cub Scout pack, we found out that it worked good to rotate between the different derbies, and not do only the Pinewood Derby every 3rd or 4th year. There are so many different and fun derbies you can do... Raingutter Regatta, Space Derby, Cubannapolis, Pinewood Derby, and Paper Rockets to name a few. If we had the Pinewood Derby every year, it got pretty competitive. If we had space in between, it was a lot funner, and the parents didn't make it as competitive.
For the pre-opener of our Cub Scout Space Derby, we lined up the rockets and had papers by each of the rockets. Everyone went down the table, and wrote something on each paper that said what name they thought the rocket should be named.
- CLICK HERE to print up the paper to have them name the cub scout Space Derby rockets.
- CLICK HERE to print up a Space Derby certificate you can give out.
** PLEASE do not download these files and email or send them digitally to others. These are for your personal use only. If you would like to share these files with others, please copy the link to this post and send them to our site so they can print off their own. We would love to have everyone that would like a copy to come here to get their own copy absolutely free. We receive money to keep our website open where we store all of our documents and PDF files by people visiting our blog. Please don't take money out of our pockets by bypassing our blog.
See the lines for the Space Derby going across the room with the planets hanging from them?
Here is how the rockets attach to the Space Derby line. We used the chalk board to keep track of the race results.
After each race, they measured to see how far the rockets went. Sometimes they had "races" to see how close you could come to a certain planet, so they would have to decide how many times to wind the rubber band.
For the awards, we wrote some of the fun names the kids made up around the outside of the boys awards. It turned out to be a fun night!

Can you share how you built or what you used for your "race track"? We would like to incorporate a Space Derby but struggle knowing how the track is put together.
